Thanks to PharmacistSteve for his post on this topic.
Only an ideological zealot could buy into such a misplaced and narrow minded perspective. One would think that with the resources available to a Senator, hitting the pause button and running such an idea past more than one or two experts, would at least result in a recommendation that makes sense.
When I see such rhetoric I lean towards believing that such remarks are designed to attract attention for other purposes. Perhaps she’s behind in some poll, possibly further fallout from the Al Franken scandal. Cause I don’t know anyone with any common sense who’d think this one-size-fits-all solution will work. Insert other foot into mouth…
Take for example an impacted wisdom tooth, where the patient has an infection which poorly responds to antibiotics. You don’t pull that tooth while it’s infected, so what’s a dental patient to do if after seven days and the problem is worse? According to senator and doctor Gillibrand, you’re just SOL.
It’s amazing isn’t it. They have no problem taking research for acute pain and twisting it into “chronic pain standards”, but that’s not enough. Now they have to run off the rails by forwarding extreme measures that have no science behind them at all. One might conclude that in the face of such irrationality, fear and desperation are all that remain. Not unlike the behavior of someone jonesing for their next hit. Only here the drug of choice is stupidity.
