This paper is a list of legal precedents supporting a chronic pain patient’s rights to effectual and life improving medical care. A Big thank you to Dr. Salman for his time and effort in tracking down this information as well as his efforts to effect change in a system which has lost sight of these provisions for its citizens.
I would argue that it’s not about medication, although that is a means to an end. But in the end it’s about life and quality of life. These are the rights granted to us under our constitution and any means which supports that, any means which strikes a balance between the upside and the downside, is an effective treatment is fair game. Yes they are dangerous if not monitored or used without supervision, but what CPP taking a prescribed opiate does so without supervision?
Quality of Life, these are important words, it’s not enough to simply say we’re upset about having medication arbitrarily reduced or stopped. It’s about our quality of life and in some cases, life and death.
